As Season 5 nears its end, Ghosts’ “Polar Opposites” delivers a chaotic yet comforting penultimate episode that showcases the Woodstone crew’s comedy skills. It’s not the most complex installment, but the cast’s full commitment makes it a highly rewatchable half-hour. Here’s my recap and review.
The main hustle brings back a familiar face: Hollywood producer Paula, last seen in Season 2, turning Pete’s tragic arrow mishap into television “art.” This time, she returns to scout Woodstone Manor as a filming location, giving Sam the perfect chance to pitch her original, slightly cynical holiday rom-com script, Polar Opposites.
Before she can hand it over, Sam workshops the script with resident ghost producer Joan, who loathes Sam’s bittersweet ending and insists a traditional happy ending is mandatory for holiday viewing. To break the stalemate, Sass dream-walks into Paula’s sleep to see what a real Hollywood power player prefers.
Naturally, the supernatural meddling backfires. Paula wakes up convinced she invented the entire story and immediately pitches it to a colleague. To save her movie, Sam and the ghosts launch a frantic gaslighting scheme to convince Paula she read Sam’s script days ago and forgot. It’s classic sitcom chaos, and it works, leaving Sam on the brink of a Hollywood breakthrough.
Meanwhile, the ghost community faces internal power struggles after Flower’s election as Ghost Representative. An anxious Thor becomes obsessively controlling about party planning, eventually admitting he’s terrified her new title means she’ll leave him behind. Flower’s reassurance that she loves his grounded nature is a quietly sweet payoff.
Hetty, determined to throw an elegant inaugural ball, clashes with Isaac, who wants to hijack the event with a grandiose Vice-Representative speech. To stop him, Hetty pulls off a brilliant, manipulative gag: she convinces Isaac he’s the “Designated Survivor” of the ghost government and locks him away for the duration of the party. The longer the gag runs, the funnier it gets.
“Polar Opposites” doesn’t rely on structural tricks or mythology; its charm is in the ensemble’s timing and the joy of watching these characters bounce off each other. Sam trying to outmaneuver a Hollywood producer while surrounded by bickering ghosts is exactly what makes this show such a delight. Hetty vs. Isaac, powered by Rebecca Wisocky and Brandon Scott Jones, is a standout pairing with fantastic comedic chemistry. The “Designated Survivor” bit is the kind of joke that sticks with you and only grows funnier in hindsight. This episode has strong rewatch value—a perfect pick-me-up when you just want a good laugh. It’s warm, funny, and packed with committed performances.
Overall, I give this episode an 8/10.
