BritBox's Gone wastes no time pulling viewers into this compelling psychological mystery.
The first three episodes blend an absorbing murder investigation with a deeply personal cold case, creating a slow-burning crime drama that constantly keeps you questioning who can be trusted. Strong writing and exceptional performances from Eve Myles and David Morrissey make this an easy series to recommend.
The story begins when respected headmaster Michael Polly (David Morrissey) reports that his wife, Sarah, has mysteriously disappeared. Detective Sergeant Annie Cassidy (Eve Myles) and her partner Becky Hammond quickly take charge of the investigation, but Michael's calm, detached demeanor immediately raises eyebrows. As new evidence comes to light, the case grows increasingly complex, and nearly everyone connected to the family becomes a potential suspect.
Morrissey is outstanding, delivering a performance that constantly keeps you guessing. Is Michael simply a man struggling to process unimaginable grief, or is he hiding something far more sinister? Every conversation and reaction leaves just enough doubt to make him fascinating to watch.
Just as impressive is Eve Myles, who gives Annie both determination and vulnerability. While leading the search for Sarah, Annie is also haunted by an unsolved cold case that has consumed her for years. Her weekly visits with the victim's mother add genuine emotional weight and reveal just how personally she carries every investigation. It's this balance between professional drive and personal compassion that makes Annie such a compelling lead.
By the end of Episode 3, the mystery has taken several unexpected turns, raising even more questions while keeping the suspense firmly intact. The writing carefully peels back each layer without giving too much away, making every revelation feel earned.
Three episodes in, Gone has all the ingredients of an excellent British crime thriller. Between its layered mystery, emotional storytelling, and two powerhouse lead performances, I'm completely invested in seeing whether Annie can solve both the disappearance and the cold case that's haunted her for so long. Overall, I give the first three episodes a 9/10.
