After three episodes, Lucky is shaping up to be exactly the kind of fun, stylish thriller that's perfect for summer viewing. Anya Taylor-Joy continues to shine, bringing a playful confidence and unpredictability to a character who seems to be at her best when everything around her is falling apart.
Episode 3, "Read the Room," finally brings Lucky face-to-face with the husband who betrayed her, but getting there is anything but easy. After hiding in the back of Dutch's truck, Lucky finds herself witnessing a brutal interrogation that gives her a new lead in her search for Cary, and makes it clear that the people chasing her are willing to do whatever it takes to get their money back.
With her father's advice ringing in her ears, Lucky realizes that running and hiding won't be enough. If she's going to survive, she needs to start thinking like the con artist her father taught her to be.
That's where the episode really lets Taylor-Joy have some fun. Lucky uses everything she's learned to manipulate the people around her, slipping into different personas and reading every room she enters. Her ability to stay one step ahead—even when she's completely outmatched—is what makes her such an entertaining character to watch.
The flashbacks featuring Lucky and her father, John (Timothy Olyphant), are another highlight. Taylor-Joy and Olyphant have terrific chemistry, and their scenes together add an emotional layer to Lucky's story. The lessons John taught her about reading people's moods and understanding the energy of a room aren't just clever tricks from her childhood—they're survival skills that Lucky now relies on when her life is on the line.
The episode builds toward a fantastic cliffhanger when Lucky finally finds Cary. After everything he's put her through, the two simply stare at each other, leaving the episode hanging on a moment loaded with betrayal, anger, and unfinished business.
Three episodes in, Lucky is proving to be a fast-moving, entertaining thriller with a terrific lead performance. Taylor-Joy is clearly having fun with the material, and her chemistry with Olyphant gives the series an added emotional spark. It's stylish, chaotic, and just the right amount of ridiculous. Overall, I give Episode 3 a 9/10.
