A hidden enemy inside the United States pushes Joe into a conspiracy far more dangerous than she ever anticipated.
Lioness continues to raise the stakes in Season 3, and Episode 3, “The Bear Is Infected,” takes the conspiracy surrounding Joe to an entirely new level. The episode is heavy on tension, strong character moments, and a growing sense that the people Joe is fighting may be much closer to home than anyone realizes.
The writing is particularly strong when it comes to Joe and her team piecing together Oleksandra’s information. What initially appears to be a question of who betrayed Joe quickly becomes something much bigger: a deep-cover Russian network operating inside the United States, with powerful political figures potentially compromised. Suddenly, Joe isn't simply dealing with an enemy targeting her—she's confronting a threat that could reach the highest levels of government.
The episode also does a great job showing the personal cost of Joe's work. Her family is now caught in the middle of the danger, and even routine moments become potential threats. Joe may be trained to operate in the shadows, but keeping that danger away from the people she loves is becoming increasingly impossible.
Zoe Saldaña continues to bring tremendous emotional weight to Joe, while the chemistry between her, Kaitlyn, Byron, and the rest of the team keeps the investigation compelling. There's also something particularly effective about watching the team try to stay several steps ahead of an enemy they can't fully see.
But that ending is brutal. Seeing Joe restrained and subjected to psychological and physical torture makes the present-day storyline even more unsettling. After everything we've seen her survive, the question isn't whether Joe can fight back—it's how long she can endure before the Russians finally break her.
Three episodes in, Lioness is proving that Season 3 isn't just bigger. It's more personal, more paranoid, and potentially more dangerous than ever. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
