The Season 3 finale brings Lioness full circle, leaving Joe with almost nothing left to lose.
Lioness closes its third season with a brutal, emotionally charged finale that delivers one of the show’s biggest twists yet. “The Unraveling” picks up after Joe’s rescue, but rather than going home, she immediately begins hunting the people responsible for her kidnapping. Her investigation leads her to Russian asset Dmitri Sokolov and a chaotic restaurant shootout that leaves multiple operatives seriously wounded. The CIA then follows the wrong trail, targeting Ukrainian operative Oleksandra Balakin and ultimately killing her.
Then comes the twist that changes everything: Aaliyah Amrohi is back. The Season 1 character is revealed to be the mastermind behind Joe’s abduction, directly linking the Season 3 storyline to the show’s original mission. Aaliyah wasn’t trying to have Joe killed. She wanted Joe captured and transported to Doha so she could use her as bait, knowing the Lioness team would come looking for her. Her ultimate target is Cruz, who killed Aaliyah’s father in Season 1. Because Joe escaped before the trap could be completed, Aaliyah is still out there, preparing to try again.
It’s a fantastic full-circle twist, although the Russia-Ukraine storyline becomes somewhat convoluted before the finale reveals what is really happening. Some of the operational decisions also feel unnecessarily messy, but the episode truly delivers an emotional payoff.
Joe’s family conflict has been building throughout the season. From the beginning, she has struggled to reconcile her responsibilities as the head of the Lioness program with her roles as a wife and mother. Joe genuinely believes that her work protects her family by stopping threats before they reach them. Yet every mission also creates the very danger she is trying to keep away from them.
Neal sees that contradiction very differently. He has spent the season watching Joe repeatedly choose the mission, even when doing so places enormous pressure on their marriage and children. Joe’s kidnapping makes the consequences of those choices impossible to ignore. She may have survived because of the skills and instincts that define her as a Lioness, but her family has had to live with the cost.
That is what makes the finale’s ending so painful. Joe finally comes home—only to discover that Neal has taken their daughters and left. From Joe’s perspective, she has spent her life making sacrifices for her family. From Neal’s perspective, those sacrifices have increasingly meant exposing them to danger and instability. The show does not completely dismiss either perspective, making their conflict far more effective than a simple “work versus family” storyline.
Zoe Saldaña is excellent in those final scenes, particularly when Joe’s professional armor finally falls away. She walks through the empty house, sees what her family has left behind, and breaks down on her daughters’ bedroom floor. Joe has spent three seasons surviving seemingly impossible situations, so watching her realize she cannot save the one thing she wants most is devastating.
The finale also reinforces one of Lioness’s strongest themes: The consequences of a mission do not necessarily end when the shooting stops. Aaliyah’s return makes that idea literal, tying the repercussions of Season 1 directly to the danger Joe faces now.
“The Unraveling” is not a perfect finale. The conspiracy becomes overly complicated, and some of the action feels more chaotic than suspenseful. Nevertheless, the episode sticks the landing where it matters most. Joe survives her captivity but loses the family she believed she was protecting—and the enemy responsible for her ordeal is still out there.
Season 3 has taken Lioness in a darker, more personal direction, and this finale makes it clear that Joe’s greatest battle may no longer be happening overseas. Instead, it may be determining whether anything remains of the life she sacrificed everything to protect.
That is one hell of a cliffhanger. Surely another season is coming, right?
