Cupertino Review: “A.J. & Buddy” — When Two Clients Put the Firm at Odds

When two business partners become opposing clients, Cupertino turns a prediction-market scandal into a fast-paced legal showdown with humor, tension, and personality.

What happens when two lawyers take opposite sides of the same case? In Cupertino, the answer involves courtroom chaos, divided loyalties, and an expensive prediction-market scheme. “A.J. & Buddy” delivers one of the show’s most entertaining episodes yet, combining legal drama, comedy, and character-driven storytelling as Michael and Olivia work against each other.

The case centers on Christy (Ella Stiller), who meets a charming stranger, A.J. (Ben Cook), during a night out. Their spontaneous adventure takes a troubling turn when A.J. brings her aboard his private jet and claims they are flying to the Caribbean. Christy soon realizes that he is fleeing federal authorities.

A.J. and his business partner, Buddy (Taip Oskar Ćeman), are the wealthy founders of WagerMode, a prediction-market platform that lets users bet on real-world events. California authorities want the operation closed. While A.J. remains airborne, authorities arrest Buddy, and District Attorney Sally Clawson (Amanda Warren) offers both men the same deal: the first to betray the other gets immunity.

The arrangement pits the firm’s founding partners against each other. Michael represents A.J., while Olivia represents Buddy. Their attempts to secure immunity create a frantic courthouse race, with each lawyer trying to protect a client before the competition gets there first. The premise gives the episode tremendous energy while preserving the case’s legal stakes.

Michael and Olivia’s competition also deepens their evolving partnership. They respect each other, but their determination to win exposes the tension between personal loyalty and professional responsibility. Watching them strategize against one another adds a fresh dimension to their chemistry and reinforces why their relationship remains the series’ strongest element.

Christy, meanwhile, becomes an unexpected voice of reason for A.J. Although he remains determined to escape, she urges him to stop running and accept responsibility. Her influence grounds the story emotionally, which is otherwise dominated by money, strategy, and corporate maneuvering.

Olivia then uncovers a major complication. Buddy secretly uses WagerMode under the username “Go For Broke” to place enormous bets designed to manipulate political elections. The revelation suggests that authorities are pursuing something far more serious than an illegal betting platform. Neither lawyer exposes the secret before the episode ends, leaving the case open for a compelling return. A.J.’s million-dollar gold brick gift to Christy adds one final eccentric touch.

Away from the case, Natalia visits Price, Siffre, & Associates to inspect her investment and finds an unexpectedly quiet office. Nichole joins her, and their amusing new friendship leads to a friendly boxing match. Busy Philipps and Renée Elise Goldsberry share lively chemistry, giving Girls5eva fans a playful reunion and providing a welcome break from the legal conflict.

“A.J. & Buddy” ranks among Cupertino’s strongest episodes. Its unusual case tests Michael and Olivia’s partnership, while the political-betting twist expands the conflict. Sharp humor, energetic performances, and promising unresolved questions make this episode an 8.5/10.
