Poker Face Season 2 Kicks Off with a Bang

Charlie Cale is back for another season of Peacock's Poker Face, which kicks off with a bang. Here are my thoughts on the first three episodes of the second season.

If you haven't had the chance to dive into the series yet, let me tell you about it! It follows Charlie Cale, a hardworking casino employee with an exceptional talent for spotting liars. As she journeys across the United States, she finds herself on the run from her casino boss following a mysterious death. Along the way, she engages in exciting "case of the week" mysteries in the charming Colombo style of detective storytelling. Each episode introduces her to a host of colorful characters as she unravels the puzzles before her crime.

The second season premiered this past Thursday on Peacock with three amazing episodes that truly blew my mind! Right from the start, the first episode, "The Game is a Foot," dives into a fascinating family dispute over inheritance after their mother's passing. It is one of the best episodes yet! Plus, guest star Cynthia Erivo delivers an outstanding performance, portraying five sisters, one of whom is the murderer within the family. How thrilling! I'm already putting down Erivo as the favorite to win at the Emmys for Guest Actress.

Meanwhile, "Last Looks" presents a captivating episode that explores the intricacies of Hollywood production and delves into the psyche of an individual who has inherited a family legacy of funeral home ownership, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito. His wife, played by Katie Holmes, is deeply enamored with glamour and aspires to pursue her own life; however, this desire comes at a significant cost. It's not only exhilarating and captivating but also poignantly illustrates Esposito's character in a heartrending manner by the episode's conclusion.

And of course, "Whack-A-Mole" is an exciting episode that has been building up since the end of season one! It features Charlie finally getting caught by Beatrix, played by the excellent Rhea Perlman. Beatrix really wants to use her special gift to ensure that none of her staff is the mole leaking to the FBI. This episode also shines with a fantastic lineup of guest stars, including Richard Kind, who delivered another excellent performance; he can do no wrong here! We also see the talented Simon Helberg and the hilarious John Mulaney stepping in. Overall, this episode was absolutely brilliant and packed with laughs! It even has some twists that'll keep you on your toes, especially if you're paying attention.

Following the conclusion of these three episodes, I am exceedingly enthusiastic to discover the forthcoming adventures that await Charlie. After finalizing her narrative arc with Beatrix, she is embarking on a new journey, traversing the country to uncover her destination and the individuals she will encounter along the way. What I genuinely appreciate about this series is not solely the character of Charlie and the exceptional writing, but also the outstanding guest stars who participate in each episode. Unlike other shows that excessively incorporate guest stars, their presence integrates so seamlessly that it never appears contrived.

Overall, I give these episodes 9.5/10.
