DMV "Pilot" Review: Does CBS's New Comedy Pass the Test?

What happens when a workplace full of misfits meets a government office? CBS's new comedy DMV shows us, with plenty of laughs. Here's my recap and review.

The latest CBS comedy, DMV, debuted this week. Is it worth watching, or should you skip it? Here are my thoughts on the series premiere.

The series depicts the chaotic lives of employees working at a local DMV. We meet driving examiner Colette (Harriet Dyer), who has a big heart but sometimes oversteps boundaries trying to impress the new guy, Noa (Alex Tarrant). There’s also Vic (Tony Cavalero), a former bouncer, and Gregg (Tim Meadows), a surprisingly former English teacher, as they navigate the ups and downs of public service.

The primary conflict kicks off when two consultants arrive to review the department. Barbara (Molly Kearney), the newly promoted, high-strung manager, tries desperately to ensure her employees don't give the wrong impression. However, things get immediately worse when she finds out the consultants aren't just reviewing the branch; they plan to stay for the entire year. Yikes!

Cast Chemistry and Potential

DMV was one of my most anticipated new shows for the fall TV season. While the pilot isn't perfect, I enjoyed certain moments, like watching Brent (Mark Feuerstein) struggle endlessly with Noa just to get an updated Real ID, especially since he doesn't get the final outcome by the episode's end.

Overall, I love this cast. I've been mentioning Harriet Dyer as someone to watch since her roles in American Auto and Colin from Accounts. She works so well with this ensemble, from Meadows (who often steals scenes) to her chemistry with Tarrant (who’s funny, especially for viewers who know Tarrant only from NCIS). And Kearney as Barbara is amusing as well, particularly as her character tries to balance being the boss while desperately attempting to foster a "family" work environment.

This show definitely has the potential to become a solid workplace comedy, relying on its strong ensemble.

Overall, I give this series premiere an 8/10.
