In the end, a ghost risked all for his friend, but another took the elevator to the afterlife. Here's our recap of the hilarious, high-stakes season premiere, "Soul Custody."
The season premiere of Ghosts jumped right into the chaos with Jay and Sam desperately trying to resolve the contract that would cost Jay his soul to Elias. Their solution? Trap the demon in the ghost-busting device! This plan worked, until they realized they had accidentally trapped Carol as well. Oops!
With time running out, the group faced a terrifying choice: release the pair to save Jay, or risk eliminating them. Both Elias and Carol were ultimately released. The ensuing chaos saw Elias and Jay engaged in a dramatic scuffle that felt straight out of a Star Wars Holiday Special. Patience briefly tried to step up to take Jay's place in the contract but quickly backed out when she realized how hot hell actually is.
Then came the emotional moment: Pete intervened, sacrificing his eternity for his buddy Jay. But before he could seal the deal, Carol stepped in, shook Elias's hand, and headed down to hell. In a final, baffling twist, Carol was instead pulled up to Heaven. Kind of weird, right?
In the end, Jay's soul is saved, and he finally gets his cool, relaxing chair. Meanwhile, Pete and Alberta are left to figure out how to handle their new relationship status among their fellow ghosts.
Review: The Best and Most Baffling Moments
"Soul Custody" featured some truly memorable moments. The opening scene, which included Pete, Isaac, Hetty, and Flower singing "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," was absolutely hilarious and a fantastic way to open the season.
However, the main conflict quickly resolved itself, allowing Jay to be freed from Elias's contract. Carol sacrificing herself for Jay was a good, quick solution, especially since she finally learned about the wrongs she had done to Pete in the past. Pete’s ultimate intervention, his willing sacrifice for his friend, was genuinely moving and the episode's emotional high point. And, of course, Patience wasn't going anywhere; her presence just wouldn't have added much meaningful value to the central cast or the viewers.
While the story beat of Carol ascending to Heaven felt a little strange given her recent history, the premiere succeeded with great moments and solid performances that kept the tone light and the stakes high. Overall, I give this premiere an 8/10.
