Hacks (S5, Ep. 3) "No New Tricks"

As Hacks nears its finale, it returned to Vegas to explore the peril of being a fool. 'No New Tricks' centered on risk—buying a dying casino, dating a coin-pulling man, and the danger of revealing true self. Here's my recap and review.

The episode centers on Deborah’s whirlwind, and ultimately disastrous, connection with Nico Hayes (Christopher Briney), the Palmetto’s trendy new artist-in-residence. Initially dismissing their spark as a PR stunt, Deborah goes so far as to tip off the paparazzi to control the narrative. However, when she realizes Nico’s interest is authentic, she experiences a rare lapse into vulnerability, over-texting like a smitten teenager, and even inviting him to be her plus-one to Marty’s wedding. The fallout is swift and brutal; after a breakup, Nico releases a viral diss track mocking the comedy legend. While the humiliation stings, Ava quickly pivots, realizing the digital drama is the exact fuel they need to skyrocket ticket sales for Deborah’s upcoming Madison Square Garden show. Meanwhile, Marty’s wedding provides the episode’s most chaotic sequence when his fiancée is apprehended by the FBI for fraud mid-ceremony. In the aftermath, a shattered Marty proposes to Deborah in a moment of desperation. She gently declines, but in a rare moment of grace, she encourages him to stay open to the pain, noting that being able to get your heart broken at their age is a gift, not a curse.

While Deborah navigates the high-stakes world of legacy and heartbreak, Ava finds herself trapped in a "cringe" comedy of her own making. She begins dating Eli, proudly touting his profession as a sex worker to bolster her own progressive credentials. Her performative tolerance hits a wall, however, when Eli reveals his true passion: magic. Ava’s visceral disgust at his sleight-of-hand exposes her own intellectual elitism, proving that for all her "woke" posturing, a magician is the one thing she cannot find empathy for. The episode concludes with a major business play as Marcus attempts to purchase the historic, run-down Paradiso casino. Inspired by her realization at Marty’s wedding that risk is necessary, Deborah finds Marcus and offers to be his 50/50 partner. As the credits loom, Deborah leans fully into her new villain era, reacting to Nico’s diss track with a legendary battle cry: "Call Diane Warren!"

"No New Tricks" is Hacks at its most delightfully awkward. By highlighting the theme of "cringe"—whether it's Deborah over-texting a Gen-Z artist or Ava’s squirming at a card trick—the show beautifully uncovers the vulnerabilities that fame often masks for these characters. It’s a lively, humorous, and truly human hour of television. The series skillfully weaves together three different storylines around a shared emotional heartbeat, reminding us that no matter how many casinos you own or awards you earn, the world has a way of making you feel like a kid again. Deborah is stepping into the final chapter of her career with her heart wide open and a clear game plan—ready for whatever comes next, including that inevitable clapback.

The "magician" subplot smartly highlighted Ava’s judgmental nature, contrasting her goofy hobby scene and revealing her sharp personality. The wedding rejection scene showcased Jean Smart and Christopher McDonald’s performances, emphasizing that heartbreak signals vibrancy, not failure. Deborah Vance's feud setup connects her Vegas roots with her New York ambitions, adding lively chaos to the final season.

Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
