DMV (S1, Ep. 19) "Car-lette"

In this penultimate episode of the series, Colette faces a mechanical crisis that quickly becomes a deeply personal journey. Does she actually fix her car, or does she only make things worse? Here is my recap and review of “Car-lette.”

When Colette tries to renew her car’s registration, she hits a major roadblock: her vehicle fails inspection thanks to a laundry list of mechanical issues uncovered by Gregg’s mechanic—repairs that come with a hefty $3,000 price tag. Determined to save money, Colette ignores professional advice and turns to the internet for a DIY fix. Unsurprisingly, this “different approach” only makes things worse, ultimately leaving her stranded in a coffee shop drive-thru.

Gregg steps in and tries to help by trading her car in for a reliable used model, but the well-meaning gesture only upsets Colette. In a moving confrontation, she finally reveals the car’s true significance: it was a graduation gift from her father. She admits she deeply regrets not returning home before he passed away; hanging onto the car is her way of keeping him close. The tension melts into a beautiful, quiet moment as the two coworkers listen to her father’s favorite John Denver song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” with an emotional Colette silently taking it all in.

Meanwhile, the DMV’s B-story delivers some classic comedic relief. Barb, worried about a high-stakes robbery in the neighborhood, stages a training simulation for the staff. The plan falls apart instantly when Noa fights back instead of surrendering. This disaster leads Barb to introduce a new, controversial policy: in the event of a robbery, the staff should do absolutely nothing and let the situation play out.

That lesson quickly backfires during a tape review when Ceci and the others notice Vic sprinting away in fear during the drill. Vic tries to act tough to save face, but Barb eventually talks him down from trying to reinvent his personality. The episode closes on a hilarious note as the staff takes Barb’s “do nothing” advice far too literally, refusing to assist a woman whose purse is stolen by an elderly man who is still slowly shuffling away.

“Car-lette” is a strong episode and a bittersweet reminder that we’re only one week away from the series finale. The dynamic between Colette and Gregg remains the heart of the show; they’re the gold standard for workplace “work husband/work wife” chemistry. Seeing this more vulnerable side of Colette lands with real emotional weight and reinforces why she’s such a beloved lead. Paired with the DMV plot’s sharp, ironic humor, this installment serves as a fantastic setup for the end.

Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
