Looking for a new crime thriller this summer? Hulu's new series will pull you in. Here's my review of Hulu's Furious.
After just three episodes, Hulu's Furious is shaping up to be one of the best new shows of the summer. Emmy Rossum and Lola Petticrew are outstanding as an FBI rookie and a serial killer whose paths are slowly moving toward a collision course, while both women are dealing with deeply personal trauma that drives their actions.
The series follows FBI probationary agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum), a former NYPD homicide detective who is brought into an investigation involving a string of wealthy men who have died under suspicious circumstances. Meanwhile, Catherine (Lola Petticrew) is on a personal mission of revenge, targeting men connected to a dark chapter from her past.
What makes Furious so compelling is the way the series slowly reveals Catherine's motivations while allowing Alice to become increasingly obsessed with finding her. The performances are excellent, particularly Rossum and Petticrew, who give the series its emotional weight and make both sides of this cat-and-mouse game equally fascinating.
Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, who previously created The Dropout, Furious is inspired by the 1987 film Black Widow. If you enjoyed the dark, twisted relationship at the heart of Killing Eve, there's a good chance you'll find something to enjoy here as well.
Three episodes in, I'm already looking forward to making this part of my Monday viewing routine. The series has plenty of mystery, revenge, thrills, and complicated characters—and I can't wait to see where this cat-and-mouse game goes next. Overall, I give the first three episodes a 9/10.
