When a fugitive’s escape plan puts two Marshals in the blast zone, “Blast Radius” turns a familiar manhunt into a gripping fight for survival.
“Blast Radius” delivers an action-packed hour of Marshals, bringing Kayce Dutton face-to-face with Rudy Carpenter, a fugitive who has haunted him since Season 1. After the domestic terrorist steals several barrels of explosive material, the team races to find him while Andrea’s leadership is tested amid her continuing struggle with PTSD. The result is a tense thriller that balances a high-stakes investigation with personal turmoil before ending on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger.
Carpenter, a serial bomber who previously escaped the Marshals, has no intention of returning to prison. Kayce is determined to bring his “white whale” to justice once and for all, but Carpenter’s history—and a warning from his ex-wife—makes it clear that he always has an escape plan. As Kayce and Belle investigate, the case becomes increasingly personal and volatile.
The episode’s character drama adds emotional weight to the manhunt. Kayce’s opening nightmare reveals the trauma he still carries, while Andrea continues to deal with the aftermath of her kidnapping and her father’s murder. Her PTSD causes her to perceive threats that may not be real, making Gifford’s decision to put her in charge particularly daunting. With Cal preparing to take medical leave for cancer treatment, Andrea must prove that she can lead the team while trying to regain her own sense of stability.
Kayce and Andrea’s relationship also moves forward, beginning with a late-night text that hints at their growing attraction. Their chemistry provides a quieter counterpoint to the escalating crisis, although their unresolved trauma raises questions about whether either of them is ready for a relationship.
The hunt leads the Marshals to an abandoned barn northwest of Bozeman, where a wounded Carpenter makes his final stand. Just as the team believes it has him cornered, he produces a hidden remote detonator and triggers an explosion—with Kayce and Andrea still inside.
The final moments provide a powerful endpoint for the first half of this two-part story. With Kayce and Andrea’s survival uncertain, the explosion delivers a dramatic final punch and makes the wait for the next installment agonizing. Although the investigation follows some familiar thriller beats, Carpenter’s history with Kayce, Andrea’s leadership test, and the explosive cliffhanger give the story plenty of momentum.
“Blast Radius” is a strong episode of Marshals that delivers tense action without losing sight of its characters’ personal struggles. Kayce’s pursuit of Carpenter drives the investigation, Andrea’s trauma adds emotional depth, and their developing relationship adds another compelling thread. The story occasionally leans on familiar fugitive-hunt conventions, but its character dynamics and devastating final moments more than make up for it. With a volatile threat, a meaningful test of leadership, and an ending that demands an immediate follow-up, “Blast Radius” earns an 8/10. Now, the biggest question is whether Kayce and Andrea escaped the explosion alive.
