What an amazing week it was for One Chicago! Let's dive into the recap!
Chicago Med "The Book Of Archer"
This week's episode beautifully explores Dr. Archer's journey as he navigates the challenging news of his ex-wife's passing. While managing his responsibilities as the head of the Emergency Department for the day, he also finds himself coming to terms with his loss, especially as Lenox takes a personal day to care for a patient facing an incurable illness. It's a poignant moment that highlights his professional and personal struggles, making the story genuinely relatable.
Archer thoughtfully takes on various cases, starting with a PCP patient who is humorously trying to order a McFlurry at Taco Bell. He also helps a courageous 18-week pregnant woman who has just learned about a cancerous tumor after an unfortunate electrocution.
However, what really drives Archer to elevate his efforts is a young boy experiencing a panic attack, convinced that his heart is rejecting him and doesn't want to be a part of him. In this challenging moment, Archer goes above and beyond by inviting the mother of a donor heart (played by Amy Arcker) to have a heartfelt talk about her daughter, providing not only support for the boy but also a chance for the mother to find some closure.
After a long day, he finally opens up to someone about his loss, and it's heartwarming that it's with Asher. As he shares his regrets about what he could have done, she gently reminds him that while he can't change the past, he can learn from it and make positive changes. To show her support, we see her returning to his place with dinner and a delightful box of Captain Crunch Berries, which Archer usually doesn't indulge in but is willing to make some changes, just as Asher encourages him to do.
"The Book of Archer" was a fabulous Archer-centered episode, making me appreciate the character even more! I've had my fair share of ups and downs with him, even debating his choices in front of the TV during the past few seasons since he joined Med. But now, I feel like I truly understand him better than ever before! Steven Weber's performance is fantastic- even if it doesn't match Noah Wyle's excellent work on The Pitt, it's still impressive. Amy Arcker was unforgettable, too; she even inspired me to rewatch some of her Hallmark movies! While I absolutely loved the Archer-Asher moment, I can't overlook the beautiful bonding between Archer and Lenox. Their conversation was skillfully written and acted, showcasing how these two cold-hearted doctors managed to find a connection in Med.
This episode served as a tribute to ER, especially airing on the 16th anniversary of the series finale. We got to see the title on screen for the first time in the show's history (something that ER had shown during the series' run). And if you haven't seen "The Book of Abby," you should watch it—it's such a fantastic farewell to Abby Lockhart!
Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
Chicago Fire "A Beast Like This"
This week, while Truck 81 is taking a short break, Kidd is dedicating her time to her Girls on Fire program. During this time, she meets Natalie Evans, an enthusiastic girl eager to join in. Although Natalie might not fully meet the recommendation criteria, her determination and interest in firefighting- and in Kidd- shine through. However, when Kidd finds out that Natalie has been caught smoking and doesn't come back, she starts to worry and sets out to find her. Following the address Natalie provided, Kidd discovers it leads to an abandoned area. Ultimately, her investigation brings her to the realization that the name she found belongs to a little girl her firehouse heroically rescued years ago. Could Natalie be the kid that Kidd and Severide could adopt?
On another note, when a call comes in about a motor vehicle accident at the mall, Pascal becomes visibly upset upon seeing a young girl who was struck by a car. In his frustration, he even expresses his feelings directly to the driver involved. Meanwhile, as Severide checks in on the Chief, Pascal believes he's coping well, attributing his emotions to the heat of the moment.
However, when Novak notices his distress in his office (probably the visit from the fireifighter that he punched earlier this season didn't help at all), she not only reaches out to him but also reminds him of the wise words he once shared with her a few months ago about the responsibilities of being first responders. That little nudge might have offered him some comfort.
Damon's back at 51 for his first day, and he's ready to shine! While there might be some nerves, he has been absolutely rocking it- first breaking Casey-Gallo's record in training and then stepping up to take responsibility for the equipment mishap with Herrmann. It's clear that Damon is on the right track, and he can relax knowing he'll be at 51 for a long time. So go ahead and unpack that backpack, kiddo; you're here to stay!
Violet and Novak are going through some challenging medical situations- one of them even faints while working out at the gym, while the other is dealing with an infection in his leg. But here's the interesting twist: despite their different health issues, they both choose to go to the same gym! It really makes you wonder if the gym manager could do a better job of looking after his customers.
Violet has been trying her best to carve out some time for Flynn, but between work and other responsibilities (like writing that important letter to Carver), it's been a challenge. When they're at Molly's, it's clear that Violet is putting up a brave front, while Flynn gently encourages her to open up about her job. I can't help but wonder how strong their relationship will be, but the exciting news is that Carver is coming back for his next shift! Yay!
"A Beast Like This" was such a fantastic episode! It had some really solid moments, especially when Herrmann was there for Damon, boosting his confidence just when he needed it. I loved how Novak supported Pascal, reflecting the way Pascal had been there for her- such a beautiful full circle for both of them. Plus, the main storyline centered on Kidd and Natalie was really compelling; I can see Kidd possibly considering adopting Natalie, maybe by the end of this season or the next. How exciting would that be?
All in all, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
Chicago P.D. "Transference"
As Kevin and Val enjoy their dinner together, they hear shots fired next door. Kevin quickly spots the suspect, but after he manages to escape, Kevin feels compelled to return and help the victim, who unfortunately passes away. The team springs into action, embarking on a search, only to uncover the surprising truth: the suspect Kevin saw is actually Val's patient, Nick.
When Kevin brings him in, they discover that yet another robbery and homicide has happened, matching the description Nick provided. At the same time, they brought in a man with a limp. To gather information, Kevin kindly offers to meet the kid's demands to see Val and talk to her, as he truly values her presence.
They discover a link between the suspect and another individual involved in selling stolen items. Just as they prepare to arrest her, they learn that Nick has been released and that the suspect might be on her way to his place. In a race against time, he reaches out to Val for help, but it turns out she's already at Nick's place trying to speak with him when the suspect unexpectedly breaks in. Upon hearing this, Kevin and Kim hurry over as fast as they can to assist.
In no time, Kevin and Kim take down the suspect, but their other challenge is calming Nick down and getting him to release Val, as he holds a knife to her. Kevin stops Nick while Kim safely pushes Val away, resulting in only a minor wound.
Later on, Kevin and Val have a heartfelt conversation about her bond with Nick and whether their relationship is truly meant to be. As they reflect on their own struggles, they come to an understanding and decide to give their connection another chance, sealing their sentiments with a warm kiss.
"Transference" was a fantastic episode focused on Kevin that truly explores the investigation while also highlighting his relationship with Val and her patient, Nick. Although it might feel a bit unsettling at times, I found the writing to be exceptional. Even though Kevin and Val's relationship seems to be facing some challenges, I'm really happy to see them giving it a try! Can we finally say that Kevin Atwater is in a full-on relationship? Wow!
Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
