When working as a ball girl for a horrible minor league baseball team, Charlie suspects a foul ball of the death of one of their players. Can she find out who it was? Here's a recap!
In this week's episode, Charlie finds herself working at an office after being inspired by The Office, hoping to discover a sense of community. Unfortunately, her plans take a wild turn when she gets unexpectedly smacked in the head with a baseball that zoomed in from a nearby minor league ballpark! After a quirky encounter, she meets the ballpark owner and lands a job as the new ball girl. However, she soon realizes that the team she's joined is far from great.
Russ, a once-promising pitcher, struggles to regain his fastball after being cut. He and his teammates scheme to place bets on their team to lose for quick cash. Initially successful, complications arise when another pitcher takes the mound for Russ's final game. Russ's teammate laces acid on the new pitcher's bubble gum, but the outcome surprises them, and the pitcher becomes a ninja. The game remains scoreless until the ninth inning when Russ's team finds a way to lose.
After the game, Charlie and the new pitcher clicked, sharing gum that took her on an unexpected acid trip, and met with the team's founder, who told her that she needed to help save the ballpark. When she wakes up, she discovers the pitcher dead, struck by a force over 100 mph. As she investigates, she suspects Russ might be involved after he mentions losing his fastball. On the day of his last game, she confuses him by saying a scout in the stands is actually a detective after Russ throws a 101 mph fastball. Busted like Benjamin Bunny.
"Hometown Hero" was such a fantastic episode from start to finish! It captured the spirit of Major League and Eight Men Out, with just a delightful hint of The Natural sprinkled in throughout this episode. Simon Rex, who portrays Russ, really shines in this episode! He starts off as a character that we genuinely care about, evolving from a run-down pitcher losing his fastball to someone who makes the big mistake of betting on his own baseball team. It's an engaging journey that draws us in!
Even Brandon Perea was a blast to watch as well as the new pitcher, especially when he was laced with acid and pitched a close-to-perfect game. And watching Carol Kane in this episode was a delight.
Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
