From a hospital gala to learning what your superpower is, here's a recap and review of the final two episodes of season one of St. Denis Medical.
Bruce-IC and the Mus-IC"
It was the night of the hospital Gala, and everyone at St. Denis Medical was hoping to have a good time.
The night's entertainment centered on Ron, who was preparing for his MC duties with a stand-up routine, and Joyce, who believed he should focus solely on securing donor money. Initially, Joyce was her classic controlling self, trying to force Ron to stick to the script. However, her own sharp, quick comebacks soon surfaced, and the two unexpectedly became a hilarious comedic duo. Their bickering and banter were so entertaining that one major donor was thoroughly amused, resulting in a successful donation by the end of the episode.
Matty, dressed sharply like 007, was attending his first party but wasn't having much fun as he dutifully brought drinks to every table. Just as he was about to leave, Serena stopped him, and the two quickly headed to McDonald's for dinner. Matty was thrilled, feeling much better because he got to spend a quality, fun time with her.
Meanwhile, Alex and Tim were attempting to enjoy what they hoped would be the best night of their lives, free of worries and responsibilities. However, a casual conversation about having more kids quickly dampened the mood, injecting an unexpected burst of drama into their evening. Fortunately, the two talked it out and headed to the hotel they'd reserved for the night, having left the party early.
The event of the night was the dance-off, where Bruce went all out with his impressive moves. He received two perfect tens from two of the judges, but an eight from Serena meant his first-place standing was hanging in the balance. It was ultimately crushed when a heartwarming competitor—a father in a wheelchair—danced with his daughter while playing their wedding video. Sorry, Bruce, but second place is your new spot this year!
"Bruce-IC and the Mus-IC" was such a hilarious episode that seamlessly integrated its characters. Ron and Joyce truly clicked, demonstrating a perfect comedic dynamic that was a joy to watch.
Watching Alex enjoy herself, only to have her conversation with her husband take that sudden dramatic turn, made their scene surprisingly compelling. Bruce, although a genuinely great dancer, was incredibly funny in both his meticulous preparations and his dramatic reaction to getting second place. The guy clearly has skills, it's not just for show!
At least Matty got the fun, relaxed evening he hoped for with Serena, which undoubtedly increased his hopes for a future with her. The big question remains: Will she ever feel for him the way he does?
All in all, the cast's strong performances, coupled with solid writing, made for a great half-hour. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
"This Place Is Our Everything"
In the season one finale, Joyce briefly becomes the hospital's favorite after receiving a $10 million donation from the previous episode. She tries to use the money for the hospital, only to find herself trapped in a "yes-woman" web, constantly agreeing to the various departmental needs from the eager employees.
When Bruce and Ron try to pitch their own ideas to her, they discover the money is already gone—spent on every small request. However, things take a dramatic turn after a water leak causes the ceiling to collapse in the Emergency Department. After twisting her ankle in the ensuing chaos, Joyce is forced to confront the truth: she can't please everyone. This incident compels her to make a final, decisive choice about the donation money: she decides to create a birthing center.
While busy tending to patients, Serena makes a genuine effort to find a woman who matches Matt's preferences, preferences that everyone but her knows are actually a description of Serena herself. The awkward situation finally explodes when Val confesses to Serena that Matt has deep feelings for her. Serena is left completely shocked, leaving the audience to wonder whether she reciprocates his feelings.
The undisputed MVP of the season is Alex. When asked directly what her "superpower" is, she initially dismisses the idea but eventually concludes that it's simply "being there." This superpower is on full display as she balances setting aside time for Tim's vasectomy appointment while simultaneously helping colleagues in the ED, even on her day off, truly knowing where she needs to be. Her emotional scene about the demands of nursing and family is tear-jerking, but it ends with a heartening moment and a laugh at Bruce’s joke that "being there" definitely beats X-ray vision. She's not wrong.
"This Place is Our Everything" is an excellent episode that skillfully blends heart and humor, perfectly emphasizing the series' core focus on character development. Joyce's journey to determine what to do with the donation money is excellent, as she grapples with whether to be liked or disliked by her staff. Her decision to embrace the role of "boss" and choose the birthing center, a decision with deep personal significance, was the right one.
The truth about Matt's feelings for Serena is finally revealed, setting up a truly intriguing dynamic for Season Two. Meanwhile, Alex remains the standout character, a powerful, honest representation of the challenges nurses face. This might be my favorite Alex episode yet, so well written and performed by the brilliant Allison Tolman. Overall, I gave this episode a 9.5/10.
What did you think of "Bruce-IC and the Mus-IC" and "This Place is Our Everything"? Like it, hate it? Do you think that Serena has the same feelings for Matt as he does for her? Leave a comment.
