Recap: DMV "Don't Kill the Job"

When an old friend from Colette's past unexpectedly shows up at the DMV, the question is simple: Will Colette be her true self, or lie about her actual job? Here's a recap and review of DMV: "Don't Kill the Job."

After successfully completing a driving exam and sharing a happy moment with the passing teen driver, Colette is shocked when Amber (Chelsea Frei), a famous TV star from her past, suddenly appears at the DMV waiting to be seen for a Real ID. As the two catch up, does Colette admit what she's been doing since they last met?

Not a chance.

The lie immediately snowballs. Colette tells Amber she is a successful veterinarian. Her colleagues quickly get in on the act, with Barb and Vic pretending to be Colette's husband while wearing bizarre items pulled from the lost-and-found bin, a collection they plan to auction off at the end of the month (or, more realistically, the end of the week, given how quickly that bin fills up).

The charade eventually crumbles after Colette successfully helps a dog with an upset stomach (caused by eating Colette's official DMV badge). Colette comes clean, but Amber is simply happy to see her friend happy. In a sweet moment, a teen Colette passed a driving test and asked for a photo with Colette instead of the famous TV star.

Meanwhile, Gregg notices that Noa is skipping his breaks and seems unable to relax. Gregg takes it upon himself to teach Noa the proper meaning of taking breaks, whether it's pretending to smoke or even using the DMV bathroom. He convinces Noa that there are "no limits" on bathroom breaks, leading to extended downtime.

However, Noa breaks Gregg's cardinal rule by getting caught working in the bathroom. Realizing he messed up, Noa accepts Gregg's help and finally learns how to operate in a slow, steady, and appropriately paced manner within the DMV environment.

"Don't Kill the Job" was an entertaining episode, opening with a hilarious scene where everyone auctions off items from the lost-and-found—with Barb proudly claiming her favorite piece. Colette's growing deception to impress her friend Amber was brilliantly executed, and watching her co-workers jump into the ridiculous act made it even funnier.

After four episodes, I'm genuinely enjoying this show. It's not a groundbreaking series; it's a straightforward workplace comedy built on funny characters and silly (sometimes stupid) antics that consistently work. The character development, especially Colette's need for external validation and Gregg's sage workplace wisdom, is what sells it. Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.

What did you think of this week's episode? Which workplace comedy trope did you think "Don't Kill the Job" handled the best: the messy lie or the complicated friendship? Leave a comment.

You can catch DMV Mondays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS and streaming the next day on Paramount+.
