It's the highly anticipated season premiere of Landman. How will Tommy help Cami? And what wild family drama unfolds in the season opener? Here's a recap and review of Landman, "Death and a Sunset."
In the season premiere, Tommy helps navigate a very intense business landscape as Cami begins to assert her control. During a critical lunch meeting, Cami delivers a powerful speech that ends the hopes of two women who, minutes earlier in the bathroom, had been insulting Cami, thinking she didn't belong in the high-powered corporate world. Cami proved them completely wrong. Tommy is clearly focused on protecting her from the slick businessmen who might try to manipulate her.
Cooper's new business is succeeding, and he takes Ariana and her baby to the site, enthusiastically discussing the fortune it will bring. Ainsley interviews at TCU, where she shares a strong, candid opinion on the no-athlete-cheerleader relationships at other campuses, and, despite any initial doubts, she is accepted.
Later, Angela hosts a family gathering, but Tommy becomes visibly upset over her recent worries about moving closer to Ainsley. This concern escalates into a major fight between them.
We are introduced to T.L., who is trying to watch the sunset but is interrupted by a staff member who insists it's time for dinner. T.L. refuses, wanting to wait for the sunset. When the staff member pushes the issue, T.L. gets out of his wheelchair, and another staff member comes in to assess him. As the sun finally sets, the staff member delivers tragic news: T.L.'s wife has just died, leaving him heartbroken.
By the end of the episode, a similarly profound moment occurs. Tommy receives a call, steps outside to watch the sunset, and quietly tells Angela that his mother has passed away.
"Death and a Sunset" was a truly memorable premiere, featuring performances that shine from the entire cast, including Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Sam Elliott, and especially Demi Moore. Demi Moore stands out when she delivers that compelling speech to those who doubt her character's ability to take over her late husband's oil business, showcasing Cami's unexpected strength and determination.
I am excited to see where Cami and Tommy's working relationship goes from here, and how long she will allow him to "protect" her before she entirely takes matters into her own hands. And even though we had only a few minutes of Sam Elliott's performance as T.L., it was a powerful and excellent introduction to a character whose grief immediately set the emotional tone for the episode's conclusion. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
