Here’s last week’s recap and review of episodes eight and nine of Twisted Metal, covering everything from staying alive to a retro prom. Hope you enjoy catching up!
Episode 8: “SDDNDTH”
Just as Quiet learns of John's secret wish that he made behind her back, the two quickly stay separated... for now. Things take a twisted turn (see what I did there) when Calypso announces that the contestants must stay alive and fight against the Apocalypse Nine, a formidable group of antagonists.
John and Mayhem work together and skillfully bisect a member's head. Meanwhile, Quiet, Raven, and Vermin also join forces to take down several foes. Axel, Dave, Mike, and Stu stay safe in a single room until Axel regains his confidence to face the formidable Apocalypse Nine. This teamwork and resilience highlight a strong sense of camaraderie and determination. Additionally, in this episode, we learn about Axel's background as a hired killer, which he uses to pay off his debt that led to one mission that ended with a baby in the house.
That determination came when Axel took on the rest of the Apocalypse Nine without his gas, which he usually takes before fighting, and took them all down in fashion. By the end, John apologizes to Quiet, and just when they exited their room, they entered the wishing well room. What's in store?
I truly enjoyed this episode, especially the exciting tension between John and Quiet, along with the creative team-ups of them against the mutated group of rivals. Axel's showdown with those guys, using the song from Crash Test Dummies (an absolute classic!), was entertaining to watch. Additionally, Axel's backstory was quite touching, and I look forward to learning more about him in the next episode. All in all, I give this episode an 8 out of 10.
Episode 9: "VAVAVUM"
As Quiet and John are making their way to the wishing well, Calypso suddenly appears. John admits his mistake and hopes to undo it. Although Calypso isn't happy about that, he kindly explains that to reverse the wish, they need to drink water from the well, which will set everything right.
It's the Wintertide Solstice Promenade, also known as Winter Prom, and Calypso asked the contestants to join in the ritual of offering their blood to the tree, but not Axel, due to his mechanical arms. Soon after, the party begins with a retro 90s prom theme, extending from the music to the food as well. Yes, the 90s teen drama was also involved with these characters.
Stu, Dave, and Mike share a close bond until Stu crosses a line and feels the need to apologize to Mike, who catches him in a disturbing moment of eating the remains of the Apocalypse Nine. Stu genuinely wants to help, but Dave isn't having any of it and even tries to eat Stu! The situation escalates until Stu ends up getting stabbed in the eye with a coat hanger.
It was terrific to see Mayhem, Quiet, and John sharing such joyful moments together, from dancing to taking fun snapshots at the photo booth. However, a little story came up: Mayhem was actually the baby at that house when Axel was involved in such a tragic event.
Just as things were going so well, that is, until smoke appeared and knocked everyone out. Everyone later wakes up in their own cars (yes, their own cars, as John is now alone in a car), and Calypso announces the second tournament. Holy Ships!!
This episode was delightful and even had some thrilling moments! I especially loved the scenes with John, Quiet, and Mayhem, as they truly show that these three are becoming a family, even one that Mayhem needs. The setup at the end of the episode wasn't entirely surprising. However, it was still intriguing to see John and Quiet now separated and headed towards another confrontation in the next round. I'm eager to see where this season concludes. Overall, I give each of this week's episodes an 8/10.
