Apple TV’s dark comedy thriller Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is off the rails in the best way. These episodes shatter suburban normalcy for Paula and crank the stakes up to life-or-death. With a brutal case of mistaken identity and a trip down memory lane, the series officially becomes a must-watch. Here’s a breakdown of “Chunnel” and “Raisins.”
Episode 3: “Chunnel”
Even though Trevor is technically out of the picture, Paula’s nightmare is only getting worse. She continues to receive terrifying anonymous threats, and the chilling reality sets in: someone is physically watching her every move.
As if a lurking predator weren’t enough, her ex-husband Karl (Jake Johnson) and his polished new partner, Mallory (Jessy Hodges), choose this exact moment to make a toxic custody play. They offer to bankroll Paula’s cash-strapped life, but only if she agrees to uproot her daughter, Hazel, and move with them to Boise, Idaho, where Mallory has a big career opportunity waiting. Determined to protect Hazel’s stability at all costs, Paula fiercely shuts them down.
Meanwhile, our resident professional hitman, Dennis (Murray Bartlett), tries to track Paula by slipping a GPS tracker into Hazel’s youth soccer cleats. It’s a brilliantly dark bit of situational comedy: an elite assassin having his high-tech operation derailed by kids’ sports gear. The plan leads to a catastrophic case of mistaken identity in Forest Park. Believing he’s finally cornered Paula, Dennis attacks a biking Mallory, zip-tying a plastic bag over her head before realizing, far too late, that he has the wrong woman. To cover his tracks, he stages the scene as a random mugging and flees, leaving Mallory clinging to life.
The episode then drops a major bombshell: Trevor’s bloody bathroom isn’t the first time Paula has been close to a corpse. The hour closes on a haunting note, hinting at a dark, long-buried incident from her past in Portland.
Episode 4: “Raisins”
The fourth episode eases off the present-day chaos and pivots into a bold structural shift, peeling back the layers of Paula’s history.
First, the good news: Mallory miraculously survives the attack. But she wakes up in the hospital, deeply traumatized and more desperate than ever to get out of the city and escape to Boise. From there, the narrative slides into flashbacks to Portland, exposing the rotting foundation of Paula and Karl’s old marriage. Their severe sexual incompatibility has led to painfully awkward, failed roleplay attempts and, more importantly, we see how the pair once worked together to cover up a crime involving a dead body. Suddenly, Karl’s current panic over police interest makes perfect sense.
Back in the present, Paula catches her tech-savvy Gen Z co-workers, Geri (Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg) and Rudy (Charlie Hall), snooping through her office computer. Instead of firing them, Paula strikes investigative gold. Geri’s digital sleuthing tracks Trevor’s social media (revealing his real name, Jeffrey Thorwald) and isolates the video feed of his live-streamed attack. She notices a distinct, incredibly “cringe” ring on the assailant’s hand, identical to one worn by one of Trevor’s online associates. Desperate to clear her name, Paula teams up with her young colleagues, forming an unlikely but promising alliance.
The episode ends on pure suspense. Detectives are closing in on Paula over Trevor’s murder, while Dennis calmly blends in as a grieving bystander. The final moments follow him as he smoothly lies to the police and walks straight toward Paula’s front door to finish his assignment.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed continues to be one of the most entertainingly intense shows on television. It balances its Weeds-like comedic roots with genuine thriller beats that keep you on edge.
Tatiana Maslany is electric as Paula. Watching her flip from frazzled mom battling a smug ex to a sharp, confident woman taking charge at work is a delight in comic timing. Her chemistry with Goldberg and Hall injects a fun, fresh energy into the show’s investigative storyline. The Portland flashbacks—especially the reveal that Paula and Karl once covered up a dead body—completely reframe their dynamic. Karl shifts from an annoying ex to a terrified co-conspirator, which makes their shared panic much more compelling (and darkly amusing) to watch.
Murray Bartlett, meanwhile, is chilling as Dennis. His calm, methodical performance makes every scene feel like it could explode at any moment. That final image of him lying smoothly to the police while heading toward Paula’s house is a pitch-perfect cliffhanger.
Overall, “Chunnel” and “Raisins” earn a solid 9/10. If you weren’t already hooked on Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, these episodes should do the trick.
