From celebrating Nurses Appreciation Week to catching up with Bruce and Ron at a lively medical conference, the fun and compassionate moments keep coming in this week's episode of St. Denis Medical. Here's my friendly recap and review of "Two Docs, One Conf."
It's Nurse Appreciation Week at St. Denis, and Joyce plans a full week of celebrations, starting with handing out personalized rocks that say "You Rock." Unfortunately, the staff did not appreciate the gift. When Joyce finds a rock in the trash, she goes ballistic, demanding the culprit step forward and threatening to eat the entire cheesecake table if no one admits to it. The prime suspect? Serena.
Serena frantically searches the hospital for a replacement rock and asks colleagues for help. Joyce elevates the tension by threatening to cancel the entire celebration if no one confesses by 5 PM. Serena reluctantly tells a fabricated story about being threatened, which Joyce accepts, and in a complete reversal, invites Serena to her family cabin to find a perfect rock. Awesome!
Meanwhile, the annual Heart Award for nurses is coming up. Alex is the overwhelming favorite, having won it for the past six consecutive years. However, when she displays a bit too much confidence for Matt, it motivates nearly every other nurse to vote for Matt instead. Alex tries her best to sabotage the vote and keep everyone from choosing Matt. But Matt earns every vote when he compassionately stays with a patient Alex initially thought had bowel issues, only for the patient to turn out to be pregnant, and Matt helps deliver the baby. So, did Matt finally win the Heart Award? No. Someone voted for themselves—Alex—and won again.
Ron attends a medical conference, only for Bruce to show up as a surprise guest. While Ron is attempting to bond with a single physician, Bruce constantly interferes, annoying Ron, who just wanted to have fun with his "bro." During the conference, Ron makes a joke that Bruce repeats, making Bruce popular and fueling Ron's jealousy. Ron later joins Bruce's party, very drunk and hungry, leading to a messy, chaotic scene. Ultimately, the two manage to bond over movies and snacks, reaffirming their friendship.
"Two Docs, One Conf" was a delightful half-hour filled with laughter and fun, showcasing the charming dynamics between Ron and Bruce, who are truly like the Clooney and Edwards of St. Denis Medical. Their lovable, goofy approach to friendship makes it impossible not to smile.
Even Joyce, with her exuberant, if misguided, way of celebrating her nurses, shows her caring side when she's genuinely upset about a discarded gift. Her goofy nature doesn't hide her true concern and affection. And the diabolical side of Alex, who will do anything to win yet another award, was a fun new layer of competitiveness for her character. This episode truly showcased excellent writing and character growth throughout the ensemble. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
What did you think of the ultimate winner of the Heart Award, and how do you feel about Joyce and Serena's new, strange, budding friendship?
You can catch St. Denis Medical Mondays at 8/7c on NBC and streaming the next day on Peacock.
